Candy Letters

This was an assignment from September, 2008. The "found alphabet" assignment was to find or create an alphabet from something other than letters. I don't even like candy, so I don't know why I chose it, but I am very pleased with how it turned out.

Double Agent Card Game

Okay, so this was an assignment in Art 235. We were asked to build and design the box, 50 cards and an info or instruction card. I am really excited with how this turned out.

I chose to create a game for my project. My good friend, Dave Nieman, helped create this game and write some of the copy. It's a pretty fun game and we are excited to make something of it. Before we try to get it out there, we will probably do some focus groups and make some small changes.

Despite how it looks in some of the photos, I do have all my fingers.

More Double Agent Fun

I am happy to say that the visuals for this game are practically done. While I did not go with the above noted style, the shapes are right. I am showing this "logo" of sorts because I like it. I like the halftone look.

I will upload some photos of the finished game when I get a chance.

Double Agent Card

This is my first go at designing the cards for the Double Agent card game. My friend Dave Nieman and I are the ones developing the game and it is exciting.

It is definitely worth the cost to have a good scanner. Designers, if you don't have one get one. I simply scanned in a sheet of masonite (background) a file folder, a piece of laid text-weight paper, a paperclip and some authentically typewriter written text. Simple.

Thanks

I am finding that I really enjoy playing with type. Since most of my musings are pointless, I have decided to funnel the efforts towards some creative thank you cards, after all, 'thanks' is perhaps the most important word ever set in any form of typography. This one still needs a little work.

I'll keep you all posted, hopefully soon I'll have some little card packs that you can purchase.

Leaves of Grass

I am helping to design a literary journal and am designing the layout for a poem called A poem for Walt Whitman. I am hoping to make something simple and non distracting, yet meaningful.

These scans used the photo negative scanning feature which shines light through the object, rather than just reflecting it. It produced a nice effect with this grass.

Double Agent

Some friends and I are working together to perfect a game called Double Agent. Its a group game and we're developing the cards used to play. Hopefully we will be able to mass produce it! Its really fun and I am heading up the visuals. Above is just one illustration study, just a quick photoshop sketch. More to come!

SustainaBuild Logo

SustainaBuild, a residential “green” builder, was looking for a logo that represented his company as one that values the environment as much as it values excellent building and craftsmanship.

Royal Journeys Postcard

7” × 5” digital print. Royal Journeys is a Seattle based travel company specializing in corporate sportfishing trips. This piece was designed to be handed out at a golf tournament that the company was sponsoring. The front side is promoting a specific competition that took place at the tournament; the reverse side is an ad for Royal Journeys.

Ensign Software Logo

Ensign Software is a stock market charting software based out of Idaho Falls, ID. Pretty good software, too. The logo needed to be clean and simple, yet not drab.

Two Story

18" × 24", newspaper and acrylic on canvas. I named this ‘Two Story’ for a number of reasons. It is a two-story lowercase A. It also has more than one read; viewers often comment that they don’t even see the letter A until they have looked at it for some time. In addition, it uses two media. I wanted to make a common letter look beautiful by creating it out of more common letters.

Three Little Pigs

As you can see from the previous post, I've been working on an illustration. The guideline was to create an illustration that has anything to do with the Three Little Pigs. This is my answer. I really enjoyed compiling the illustration. I created all the elements on paper using ink, graphite, and marker (for color). I scanned them and combined everything in photoshop.

I've never really done much with pigs, until this week. I also designed a simple t-shirt for a family reunion. That's a lot of pigs.

Piggies

It's been too long since an update. Things have been busy with school, a change in work circumstances, and a baby on the way.

This week I started an illustration project. The only parameter for this was it had to be related to the three little pigs. I stayed away from a Google search of the classic story in order to avoid spoiling the creative process. Some pig studies, and a handful of sketches and I am finally on my way. I'll be sure to post the finished product.

Here are some of my sketches:

The second and third image are more like studies — exploring other people's style (I am new to pigs I guess).

The last one is the direction I am going. I won't spoil the concept. More to come!!

Blacklight Party Poster

This was fun to build. I used overlays to pull out the great color behind the letters and modified the type with the pen tool to create the "beams" off the letters.

simplicity=strength

I have an assignment to paint a design. I was to create design that uses letters, shapes and five colors. I think I am going with this design.

While sketching thumbnails of other ideas, I kept trying to simplify the design. I decided to take my advice literally.

The lettering here was incredibly fun to draw and duplicate in illustrator. Now all I have to do is produce it with paint. I think taking steps away from the computer really helps put what design is really all about in perspective. Yeah, I used a computer, but I drew it first... the computer was to get the colors right. I should have veered away from the mouse all together.
